Thiruvaiyaru, hailed in the Tamil Thevaram hymns as ‘Iyaru” – to signify the confluence of five tributaries of river Cauvery, lingers in memory of the musical Saint Kakarla Thiyaga Brahmam (May 4, 1767 – Jan 6, 1847), popularly known as Saint Thiyagaraja. A deeply devoted bhaktha of Sri Rama and his consort – Sri Thiyagarajacomposed hundreds of songs and set them to melodious music.
His compositions have dominated the Carnatic music world for well over two centuries. Classical musicians all over India gather at this holy junction every year to pay their musical homage to this saint – an event popularlyknown as “Sri Thiyagaraja Aaradhana”.
Today, Thiruvaiyaru and its suburbs retain the holy ambiance and charm of a bygone era. The famous Panchanathiswara & Ayyarappar temples are located here. Thiruppalanam, a nearby village is also a thevaram sanctified abode that boasts a famous early Chola temple.
